CHARLESTOWN COMMUNITY CENTER
Studio Leader: Angela Pang
Location: Harvard University
Course: Core II
This project explores the creation of a “people’s palace” through a trio of individual pavilions which are united underneath a folding roof. The space formed between these pavilions is flexible and semi-outdoors, allowing them to serve as entrances into a central courtyard. The formal language of this structure pulls from the extruded forms of the public housing to the north as well as the pitched roofs of the adjacent church. The roofs of two pavilions slope down to meet the scale of a new playground to the west as well as the courtyard. The third pavilion rises to meet the highway to serve as a visual and auditory barrier.
