ANN ARBOR GALLERY FACADE
Studio Leader: Clara Wineberg, Bryan Irwin, Ben Harrison
Location: Solomon Cordwell Beunz , Boston Office
Course: Individual Design Charrette
A new facade for a gallery space in downtown Ann Arbor seeks to integrate itself into the material language of 20th century masonry construction while simultaneously taking advantage of a unique formal expression. The brick arch facades create portals into the gallery while upending material expectations of masonry construction. A steel frame is hidden within the brick arches to allow them to remain load-bearing as well as provide support to the curved bricks which project from the structural line. Some arches recede into the building to create a space for a small garden while other arches push out into the sidewalk to create unique exhibition spaces. The entrance of the gallery is situated on the corner of the street and undercuts the masonry structure above.
